The Things You Can Do

Research Opportunities

A number of opportunities exist for students to do independent research or special studies under the direction of a faculty member in the School of Biological Sciences. You will find the research interests of the SBS Faculty Members in the Advising Center, 101 Manter Hall.

The general procedure is to download a research form. Complete this form in consultation with the advising professor. This represents a contract as to the requirements, expectations and credit hours.

Options

INDEPENDENT STUDY (BIOS 296, 1-3 credits)

Prerequisites: BIOS 101 or equivalent high school experience.

Description: This offering is intended to permit students with little previous experience in biology, who think they might be interested in going into scientific research to gain insight into the philosophy and methods of original research.

Registration: You will need to take the completed & signed form to 348 Manter Hall, 472-2720 or to E249 Beadle Center, 472-2810 to obtain a call number.

INTERNSHIP (BIOS 395, 1-6 credits) Pass/No Pass only

Description: A combination of work outside the University and academic work in Biological Sciences arranged through Career Services. A student in BIOS 395 may take a maximum of six credits total.

Requirements: You will need a faculty sponsor to assign academic requirements (journal writing, research papers and/or additional reading assignments).  Then make an appointment with Career Services (230 Nebraska Union).
Registration: You will need to take the completed & signed form to 348 Manter Hall, 472-2720 or to E249 Beadle Center, 472-2810 to obtain a call number.

HONORS RESEARCH (BIOS 399H, 1-4 credits)

Prerequisites: Open to candidate for degree with distinction or with high distinction; or with admission to the Biological Sciences Honors Program.  Permission of the supervising faculty advisor must be gained prior to registration.  The call number can be obtained from the Biological Sciences Office (348 Manter).

Description: Registration for this course culminates a research project of a significant nature and results in a written undergraduate honors thesis.  Two faculty members in addition to the supervising faculty must read the thesis and the student must take an oral exam which includes a thesis defense.  The results of the exam and the thesis must be submitted to the College of Arts & Sciences' Committee on Degrees with Distinction by early March for graduation in May.  Students should consult guidelines for degrees with distinction in the College of Arts & Sciences for additional details. PROBLEMS IN BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES (BIOS 498, 2-8 credits)

Prerequisites: Twelve hours of Biological Sciences.  Permission of supervising staff member prior to registration.
Description: Independent study and laboratory investigation of a specific problem under the supervision of a faculty member.
